Can mesotherapy be used for facial rejuvenation?

Despite popular belief, mesotherapy is not the same as fat – dissolving injections. Mesotherapy is an injection technique using medication, vitamins, minerals or another substance under the skin.  The idea is that these substances are absorbed via subdermal plexus and produce specific result, like reduction of inflammation, not necessarily related to cosmetic at all.

Nevertheless, it is a great approach for facial rejuvenation.  Mesolift is a mesotherapy approach to treat aging, sagging, and wrinkling of the skin involving the face and neck. How food intolerances affect your health?

The relative frequency of food intolerance and food-related complaints in the general populations is very high. Many food intolerances produce minimal symptoms, yet the long-term consequences are astonishing including thyroid disease, neurological disorders, increased cancer risk and accelerated aging.

 

Food intolerance is caused by a food substance that triggers a toxic reaction on contact with our intestinal cells. Contact with susceptible cells produces inflammation that can result in intestinal damage. The inflammatory cells release chemicals that cause our immune system to release antibodies against the offending food.


Some misconception of food intolerance

 

Food intolerances are diseases of childhood. Intolerances are more likely to be symptomatic in children but are found in adults of all ages. Food intolerances are perpetrators of ongoing intestinal inflammation, which may eventually exhaust the body’s defenses.


Food intolerances are only present in symptomatic patients. Food intolerances can be subjectively silent in many individuals. Nonetheless, they continue to drain our defenses and weaken our intestinal immune system. Food intolerance occurrence is underestimated in our symptom-driven health care system.


Food intolerances are simply intestinal irritations. Food intolerances can be more than a local intestinal problem, and may increase the risk of autoimmune diseases and cancer as well as accelerated aging.

Elite athletes turning to Food Allergy testing for Better Health

Many professional athletes are turning to a new coach.  It’s not a conventional coach, it’s not even a human coach; rather, it’s a coach that instructs them in personalized dieting, a coach to help increase strength and normalize weight.  It’s a simple blood test for food and chemical sensitivity called the ALCAT Test.  Proponents claim that the ALCAT identifies adverse cellular reactions to foods and chemicals associated with inflammation. Experts agree inflammation causes chronic health problems including obesity.

 

So why is this of interest to elite athletes?  According to Roger Deutsch, test co-developer and author, Your Hidden Food Allergies are Making you Fat, “…avoidance of reactive foods might unblock insulin receptors, so food is burnt for energy and not stored as fat; decrease immune mediated muscle degradation and fatigue, and increase overall metabolic and respiratory function.  The results will be individual but all these things can arise from incompatible food triggers.”

Two of the most notable athletes to have taken the ALCAT Test are Minnesota Twins’ First Baseman Justin Morneau and Boston Red Sox’s Designated Hitter David Ortiz. Morneau is a former American League MVP and four time MLB All-Star.   Morneau’s experience was chronicled in the StarTribune wherein he states he was planning to ‘do everything I can humanly do to make myself feel better.’ The StarTribune also states: “While making the medical rounds last fall, Morneau also took the ALCAT Test to see if he had food allergies. He learned his body was sensitive, if not allergic to, sugars, gluten and dairy.” Morneau then lost 14 pounds in just a few weeks by following his new diet.

Athletes are always seeking new ways to enhance performance, and diet plays an essential role in their ability to do so.  Morneau states, “It’s not like I’ll choke or die from eating those things, but my body reacts poorly to them. It treats them as something I’m allergic to and fights the inflammation instead of the inflammation from an injury.”

The Red Sox David Ortiz was recently featured in a separate article titled, The Skinny on Big Papi’s Diet featured on ESPN.com. Even though Ortiz took the ALCAT Test for different reasons than Morneau, he had a similar experience, dropping 20 pounds in two months. Ortiz took the test because his “cholesterol had risen to dangerously high levels.” Since taking the test, and following its dietary guidelines, Ortiz said, “The results have been almost immediately noticeable.” He goes on to say, “I feel great” and “I can feel the difference when I swing a bat and when I work out, I don’t get as tired.”

Studies have shown dietary modification and food sensitivity testing to be a viable treatment modality for a number of chronic health problems.  Major League Baseball isn’t the only professional sport that has utilized the ALCAT Test.  Joe Rowgowski, Strength and Conditioning Coach for the NBA’s Orlando Magic, has been quoted as saying, “I’ve seen very good results with the ALCAT Test and often recommend it to the athletes I work with.”  In addition, Elite European Soccer Club, Juventus, was recently featured in a study titled Rational Management of Food Intolerance in an elite soccer club. This study was presented at the International Society of Sports Nutrition: 8th Annual ISSN Conference and Expo in 2011.

 

So what does all of this mean? This means your fork may actually be the best tool available for maximum performance. For the elite athlete, with all the available supplements, PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) and training methods perhaps it is indeed as simple as Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine.”  For the elite athlete or the occasional weekend warrior the best medicine may actually be finding out what foods are right for you.

How to reduce allergy symptoms naturally?

An allergy is a heightened sensitivity to a foreign substance (called an allergen) that causes the body’s defense system (the immune system) to overreact when defending itself.

 

Normally, the immune system would only react if a harmful substance, such as bacteria, attacks the body. For people with allergies, their immune system is working too hard, and it reacts even when relatively harmless substances, such as pollen, are present. The severity of an allergic reaction can vary from mild discomfort to life threatening situations. General treatments for allergies include avoidance, use of anti-histamines, steroids or other medications, and immunotherapy to desensitize the allergic response.

 

Top three tips in reducing allergy symptoms naturally:

One gram of vitamin C reduces blood histamine by approximately 20%, and 2 grams of vitamin C reduces histamine by more than 30%, thus reducing the severity of allergic reactions.

 

Quercetin Bioflavonid. Quercetin is a plant bioflavonoid naturally found in wine, tea, outer layers of red and yellow onions. Quercetin stabilizes mast cells in allergic patients, and is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. For the best effect, quercetin should be taken in combination with vitamin C and high-potency bromelain. The growing number of people who choose not to eat lots and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables are undernourished with bioflavonoids, quercetin specifically. If they don’t consume more quercetin, they will be more prone to allergies.

Food allergies may affect nearly 6 million children in U.S.

A study published in Pediatrics, 2011 suggests that food allergies affect a significant number of children in the US. This study, the largest of its kind, surveyed nearly 40,000 US households with one or more children less than 18 years of age.  Based on the data collected, the researchers found that food allergies affect 8.0% of US children or about 6 million. Of those children, 30.4% had multiple food allergies and 38.7% had a history of severe reactions. The most common allergies reported in the survey were peanut (25.2%), milk (21.1%) and shellfish (17.2%).

A well-known hallmark of food allergy is the production of IgE or IgG antibodies to a protein of the problem food. An allergy of this type develops when food-specific antibodies, bound to mast cells and basophils, present in the skin, gut and respiratory tract, come into contact with, and bind the circulating allergen. This binding activates these cells to release inflammatory mediators. This results in discomfort associated with allergy including stomach cramping, diarrhea, vomiting, hives, itching and swelling.

The prevalence of food allergies has shown a remarkable upswing over the past 10 to 20 years across all ages. There can be a genetic influence to developing allergies. Allergic parents are more likely to have allergic children. But certainly this cannot account wholly for the epidemic rise that we have seen over the decades. The manifestations of allergy are the result of the complex interaction between genetics, nutrition, immunity and environmental exposures such as tobacco smoke and pollutants that can increase the antigenic response.

Eczema and Food Allergies Often Go Hand and Hand

Eczema causes an itchy and sometimes painful rash, blisters, and dry, rough skin. It is typically a chronic problem with times of improvement followed by worsening. Typical parts of the body are involved (e.g. arms, legs, hands, face) and there is usually a family history of allergy. One of the most common triggers that is often neglected = food allergens.

I have been an eczema sufferer since age 17, and I am now 44. The eczema started on the inner elbows of my arms. Then my hands were affected; I would get these very small blisters that intensely itched, and then my fingers would swell and weep. In a Scratch Pad letter, a gentleman suggested going on an elimination diet. This meant eating nothing but chicken, broccoli, and cauliflower for about a week, then adding certain foods back in to the diet to see what was causing the itch. This was a very difficult thing to do! But after three days I noticed the itching on my hands was gone. After thinking the problem was wheat for a while, I finally pinned it down to tomatoes/ tomato sauce, and soda pop/coffee. Pinpointing a food was  difficult since my itching usually started the morning after eating an offending agent. A food diary can be helpful. Good luck on your journeys.

Can inflammation be the underlying cause?

Arthritis, gingivitis, heart disease and psoriasis are conditions that affect very different parts of the body, yet they all have something in common: inflammation. Inflammation also plays a role in dozens of other conditions, from allergies, eczema, bowel disease and autoimmune disorders like lupus to macular degeneration and memory loss.

Inflammation is your immune system’s first reaction against infection. The injured area often becomes hot, red, swollen and painful. The heat is produced by the increased blood flow to the injured area. Redness occurs because the battle and repair processes are underway. The area usually becomes swollen because of all the fluid and immune cells at the site. Pain is often the first indicator of inflammation.

Inflammation is an effective way of ensuring that invaders do not enter your body and create havoc, but when it becomes low-grade and chronic, your immune system’s army stay revved up and damages healthy issue in the crossfire. 

Stress, bacteria, viruses, parasites, environmental toxins, certain foods, smoking, high blood insulin levels and obesity are just a few of the factors that promote inflammation.

Foods you choose can either promote or prevent inflammation. Foods containing arachidonic acid, such as organ meats, beef, dairy products promote inflammation. Through a complicated process the body breaks down arachidonic acid into inflammatory compounds.

Emphasize on eating six servings of vegetables and one serving of fruit everyday. These are foods that have a low rating on glycemic index, meaning the body takes longer to break them down into blood glucose. They are the best choice for reducing inflammation.

How can probiotics benefit you?

Years of antibacterical overuse, in everything from soup to toothpaste, have left our “good” gut bacteria severely compromised. The thriving population of these bacteria helps not only our digestion, but overall immunity as well. By reinforcing these strong gut soldiers, called probiotics, we strengthen from the inside our defenses against bad bugs, yeast, and other intestinal infections.

Many delicious foods have high levels of these beneficial bacteria, including yogurt, miso, and fermented and unfermented milk. Unfortunately, many of these foods are an acquired taste, and if you don’t appreciate the sour tang, you might not get their health benefits.

A recent meta-analysis of 31 randomized, placebo-controlled studies, published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, found the probiotic S. boulardii could be “strongly recommended for the prevention of antibiotic-assoicated diarrhea and traveler’s diarrhea. Plenty of promising research suggests that probiotics can:

  • keep harmful pathogens from implanting in the intestinal wall
  • improve the function of the mucous lining of the intestinal tract
  • help manage symptoms of IBS
  • help recover from intestinal, vaginal, urinary tract infections
  • help prevent and reduce severity of colds and flu

With the various benefits of probiotics, one should definitely try to incorporate more foods that are high in beneficial bacteria into the diet, or simply spend 5 minutes and picking out a bottle at the store. High-quality probiotics supplements are generally available in the refrigerated sections of your health food store.

What temperature water do you drink?

We all know that water is good for us, but often most of us don’t give it too much thought of what temperature water is best for our health.

The temperature of water you drink matters. It matters more to those who experiences digestive complaints including indigestion, gas/bloating, constipation, diarrhea. Most would agree that our stomach/small intestine take on the responsibilities of breaking foods into smaller particles and ensuring proper digestion of food and absorption of various crucial nutrients. Their actions are similar to what a stove does for us (yes, a stove from you kitchen). A stove provides energy to cook food to ensure foods are properly digested. The cooking process essentially helps to break down the fibers of meat and vegetables. Now, imaging pouring some ice cold water into a pot of food you have been heating for a while, it will admittedly takes longer and more energy for the pot to heat up again and continue to cook. Similar to our digestive system, the body spends so much energy in heating (digesting) the food we eat. By drinking icy cold water, it immediately slows down the digestive system, preventing proper digestion and absorption. Without proper digestion and absorption of vital nutrients, the body does not have of the resources and building blocks to regenerate, rejuvenate and heal. In the long run, it will put a burden on the other parts of the body. If you are experiencing digestive complaint, consider trying to switching to warm temperature or warm water. Avoid cold or ice water when possible.

On a side note, there are many very powerful reasons to drink lots of water every day. There’s a quick reminder:

1. Weight loss. First of all because it often replaces high-calorie drinks like soda and juice and alcohol with a drink that doesn’t have any calories. But it’s also a great appetite suppressant, and often when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually just thirsty. Water has no fat, no calories, no carbs, and no sugar.

2. Energy. Being dehydrated can sap your energy and make you feel tired. If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated — and this can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness and other symptoms.

3. Headache cure. In fact, often when we have headaches it’s simply a matter of not drinking enough water. There are lots of other causes of headaches of course, but dehydration is a common one.

4. Healthy skin. Drinking water can clear up your skin and people often report a healthy glow after drinking water.

5. Cleansing. Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body.
